Brief History
St Peter's & St Pauls is set in the very heart of the fenland market town of Wisbech. The people of the parish have worshipped in the church for at least 900 years. The present church was first built in 1187AD when a Norman stone castle was erected, to replace an earlier wooden structure. It is probable that another site of worship predates this one but to date the whereabouts remains a mystery.
The church of St Peter's and St Paul's is unique in that it possesses a double nave, and twin chancels, the construction reflects the wealth and prosperity of the medieval guilds that built the original church..
The high altar of the church dates from the early part of the 17th century, and has a florentine mosaic depicting the scene of the last supper rests behind it, which dates from 1885. Just to the right of the altar some finely carved misericords can be found where the priests would have sat, just above these are the only remaining medieval stained glass windows left in the church.
Hiding one of the chancels is the magnificent organ which was built in 1951 by Harrison and Harrison, from pipework of earlier instruments. It is felt that the organ is one of the finest examples to be found within East Anglia.
In 1450 a storm caused one of the original Norman towers to collapse, it was replaced with a new central arcade, in a new style with lofty arches and slender elegant pillars. A new tower was not built until the 1530s slightly detached from the main body of the church. Beneath the site of the former archway the 14th century baptismal font rests.
All are welcome to attend any of the many services throughout the year conducted at the church, by various vicars until we get a replacement for the Rev Wim Zwalf , who retired at the end of 2008.
